Guitar Lessons for Children in Epsom: Leo’s Inspiring Progress at Age 7

I am pleased to share a progress report for my 7-year-old pupil, Leo. He has been studying with me for just under a year and attends weekly lessons.

Despite his young age, Leo is very driven and committed to the guitar. He approaches each lesson with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, which is always a pleasure to see.

I enjoy seeing him at my studio every Thursday, where he attends his lessons accompanied by his mum, and occasionally his younger sister. He has settled well into the routine and continues to make steady and encouraging progress.

I would like to highlight some of the great things already happening in Leo’s playing. He has developed excellent posture and is using a guitar support (GuitarLift), along with a well-suited Rodrigo classical guitar, both of which I recommended. This combination, together with Leo’s dedication, can only lead to strong results.

Leo also has a very good sense of rhythm, which is a fantastic foundation at his age. The piece featured in the video is called Fais Dodo, a traditional French lullaby. It presents a nice challenge as it is in a 3/4 time signature, meaning we count to three rather than four, as in most songs.

This performance marks a significant step forward in Leo’s development, which is why I asked his mum for permission to share it here. I’m looking forward to sharing more of Leo’s progress in the coming months as we continue building his skills and confidence on the guitar.

❓ FAQ – Guitar Lessons for Children (Epsom & Surrey)

What age can my child start guitar lessons?

Most children can start from around age 6, depending on their focus and coordination. Leo began at 7 and has made excellent progress within a year.

Should my child start on classical or acoustic guitar?

For younger children (ages 6–9), I usually recommend starting on a classical guitar, as the nylon strings are easier on the fingers and help develop proper technique early on.

How long does it take to see progress?

With weekly lessons and regular practice, most children show noticeable improvement within a few months. Leo’s progress after under a year is a great example of what consistent learning can achieve.

Does my child need their own guitar?

Yes, having the right size and type of guitar at home is very important. I’m happy to guide you on choosing the correct instrument to avoid common beginner mistakes.

Are parents allowed to attend lessons?

Absolutely. Many younger students attend with a parent, which helps reinforce learning at home and keeps everyone involved in the process.

Do you offer exams or just casual learning?

I offer both. Students can work towards Trinity, ABRSM, or LCM exams, or simply learn for enjoyment, depending on their goals.
