Classical Guitar Concerts Near Epsom
Are you based in the Epsom area and interested in hearing some live classical guitar music?
Not far from Epsom, just off the A3 in Raynes Park, there is St Saviour’s Church, home to the Wimbledon Classical Guitar Society, which organises wonderful classical guitar concerts in the intimate setting of a small chapel or, when larger names are performing, in the main church hall.
A few months ago I became aware of Wimbledon Classical Guitar Society and have already attended several fantastic concerts there. I have also recently become a community member of WiGS, which has allowed me to become more involved with the local classical guitar scene and meet other people who share a passion for the instrument and live music.
So far I have attended concerts by Vida Guitar Quartet, Ari Dakersian, Eva Victoria Schockmel and Yuting Wu.
What I particularly enjoy about these concerts is the atmosphere. Unlike large concert halls, you are very close to the performers and can really observe the technique, tone production, musicality and communication between the musicians.
I genuinely believe that acoustic and electric guitar players can learn a huge amount from classical guitarists, even if classical music is not their main genre.
Upcoming Concert
The next classical guitar concert is coming up on Friday 5th June 2026 at St Saviour’s Church in Raynes Park.
The concert will feature Zoe Barnett and DuoVona.
Duo Vona consists of Hope Cramsie and Ingrid Horvei Lyslo performing guitar duo repertoire, while Zoe Barnett will perform a solo guitar recital in the second half of the evening.
The event starts at 7:30pm and finishes around 9:30pm, with doors opening at 7pm.
One thing I really like about these concerts is how relaxed and welcoming they are. There is usually a small wine and soft drinks bar during the interval and the whole atmosphere feels friendly and supportive rather than formal or intimidating.
Tickets are currently:
- £15 general admission
- £8 for under 18s
The concert takes place at:
St Saviour’s Church
Grand Drive
Raynes Park
London SW20 9DL
Supporting Musicians and Being Part of Cultural Life
Another important aspect of attending live concerts is supporting young and established musicians who dedicate years of their lives to mastering their craft.
In a world increasingly dominated by short social media clips and background entertainment, there is something genuinely valuable about sitting down for two hours and experiencing live music properly in an attentive and respectful environment.
These concerts also give people an opportunity to become involved in local cultural life and experience forms of live music and artistic expression that are becoming increasingly underappreciated today.
For younger guitar students especially, attending concerts can be incredibly inspiring. It reminds them that music is not only something you practise alone in your bedroom, but also something that connects people and creates meaningful shared experiences.
What Acoustic and Electric Guitar Players Can Learn from Classical Guitarists
Classical guitarists often spend many years refining:
- Tone production
- Right-hand control
- Relaxation and posture
- Dynamics and phrasing
- Finger independence
- Accuracy and timing
- Musical interpretation
Even if you mainly play acoustic fingerstyle, pop, rock, blues or electric guitar, watching high-level classical players up close can be incredibly inspiring and educational.
You begin to notice how much attention they give to small details: hand position, movement efficiency, sound quality, articulation and musical expression. These are skills that benefit every guitarist regardless of style.
What Will You Get Out of the Concert?
Apart from simply enjoying beautiful music, you may leave feeling:
- Inspired to practise more seriously
- Motivated to improve your tone and technique
- More aware of musical phrasing and dynamics
- Encouraged to listen to different styles of music
- Reminded how expressive the guitar can truly be
For me personally, these concerts are also a great reminder that guitar playing is a lifelong journey. Seeing outstanding musicians perform live always gives me fresh motivation to keep improving my own playing and teaching.
If you live in Epsom, Ewell, Stoneleigh, Worcester Park, New Malden, Wimbledon or the surrounding Surrey area and have never attended a classical guitar concert before, I would highly recommend giving it a try.
You can find upcoming concerts and events on the official Wimbledon Classical Guitar Society website.
