Guitar Lessons for Children in Epsom: Louie’s Success Story (Age 10)

I’m excited to share the success story of my student Louie, who is 10 years old and has been learning with me since March 2024. Louie is a very diligent pupil who has already completed the Guitar Academy Book 1 by Richard Corr, and is now working through First Class Guitar by Tatiana Stachak.

During this time, Louie has made terrific progress — earlier this year he passed his Initial Grade with Trinity College London. We will soon be moving on to Grade 1 classical guitar, but for now we are focusing on consolidating the skills he has built up through his current method book.

A big part of Louie’s success is thanks to his dad, who always sits with him during practice sessions to make sure he follows the lesson plan. That support makes a huge difference. You don’t need to be a musician yourself to help your child — simply being present, listening, and encouraging can have a powerful impact. Sitting in on lessons also gives parents the confidence to guide home practice more effectively.

Today, I’d like to share a short video recorded in Louie’s lesson. He is playing “Dance from Argentina” by Tatiana Stachak, from her excellent First Class Guitar book, which helps prepare children in Surrey for Grades 1 and 2.

Resources for Parents: Helping Your Child Succeed with Guitar

I truly enjoy working with young guitar students in Epsom and across Surrey, and this blog is full of child- and parent-oriented content designed to boost your child’s guitar playing and help them achieve success in music — and beyond.

My lessons focus not only on music but also on how to learn efficiently. Every challenge in a musical piece is an opportunity for children to develop perseverance and problem-solving skills, which are life lessons as much as they are musical ones.

Here’s a growing compilation of articles and resources to help you support your child’s guitar journey:
